Freesat is the new digital platform from BBC and ITV. As its name says, it is free to receive as long as you have a satellite dish, and a standard or HD ready or full HD Freesat television and/or a Freesat box.
There are different options available, all of them involve having either a small satellite dish installed in most of the cases or a cable from the communal system which carries satellite signal from Astra 2.
Most of the new TVs have a Freeview tuner built in, but that is just for the terrestrial signal. Newer TV sets come with both digital satellite and terrestrial tuners giving the choice to select which source to use to receive digital channels.
In case you have such a TV, a 45cm dish is all you need to have full access to the new Freesat platform.
But, if you have an older plasma or LCD or any other "bulky" tv set without a built in Freesat satellite tuner, you probably need an additional box that can decode the signal from the satellite.
Also, even if the new TV comes with a built in Freesat tuner, you may need some extra functionality such as recording, scheduled recording, ability to watch one channel and record another one, or simply to use one satellite receiver to have both British and other European channels.
Freesat could be a optimal solution if you live in an area where terrestrial signal is poor or bad.
The following are just a few of the options available to receive the digital satellite channels of Freesat.
